On this Sunday Discussion, on a Monday, I am showcasing three short films that you should watch and enjoy during this holiday break!
Blue Christmas
What is it with sad Christmas movies? From the Vimeo channel Criterion Collection, comes a video essay about bleak holiday seasons in the movies. Michael Koresky and Casey Moore investigate the longstanding tradition of bleak midwinters and Christmas seasons at the movies. And they take a closer look at three of their favorites, if lesser-known, ones: Mon oncle Antoine, My Night at Maud’s, and A Christmas Tale.
The Rebound
The Vimeo channel Samaritan’s Purse brings us life in The Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan. Even though the rebuilding has been slow and there is still a lot of damage, nothing has been more endearing than their resilience and their love of basketball. Collectively, they’ve found comfort in a game, and to this day, they continue to rebound. Basketball is one of those things that brings normalcy to the people effected by the typhoon.
Our Streets
The Vimeo channel Jared Rosenthal brings us what it’s like protesting in the streets of New York City over police brutality. This short film is about the tens of thousands of people who protested in Washington Square Park on December 13th in New York City. The video showcases several people who are holding signs, or have their hands up. It’s a powerful video!
