Learn More About The Falafel’s Garden Children’s Book Kickstarter Campaign

picture1sdgewe

Sorry folks for the lack of posts.  I am still busy building the new website.  In fact this will probably be the final post under the old look before Geek Alabama moves to a newly designed site!  Anyways, for this post I wanted to talk about a Kickstarter project someone e-mailed me about.  This project is about the outdoor environment and uses some creative animal hand puppets to tell the story!

Falafel’s garden is a rhyming children’s book about gardening, cooking, and forgiveness. A clumsy, yoga-loving llama, a socially anxious sheep, and an epicurean horse come together in this endearing, yet humorous tale of the trials of friendship. Written in anapestic tetrameter, the rhythm of the book will be sure to delight readers of all ages!

Falafel the Llama, Baxter the Horse, and Griswold the Sheep are the characters in the children’s book.  Fluffmonger wrote brief story lines for them and painted ‘pop-up’ scenery for them to live in.  From the moment they created them, they knew they deserved more than a few sentences for their stories.  The book will be printed on 100% recycled paper in the US, and the plushes will be made in their studio using hand dyed organic fabrics, organic thread, and organic buckwheat hulls.

This project will close on Thursday, October 6th.  For a pledge of $25 will get a copy of the book, coloring pages, and a pesto recipe card.  For a pledge of $130, you will get a signed copy of the book, one of the three handmade plush animals, and more!  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1063630813/falafels-garden-eco-friendly-childrens-book-and-pl/description

Crowdsourcing Mornings: Seed Smart Water Bottle

Geek Alabama Crowdsourcing Mornings

This is Crowdsourcing Mornings! This post takes place every weekday morning and highlights one crowdsourcing project I liked from Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or other crowdsourcing websites.

It may be easy to drink water, but according to the latest research, 95.3% of people do not have good water consumption habits—65.9% drink water only when thirsty, while only 4.7% regularly drink healthy amounts of water. Although water deficiency causes poor health and various diseases, we still always forget to drink enough. Water is essential to leading a healthy life, so they invented Seed, a smart bottle that helps you subconsciously form healthier habits.  Seed actively tracks your daily hydration habits and uploads real-time data to an app or other smart fitness device where you can check your progress. Users can receive scientific feedback while managing their hydration plan in their app.

Seed’s built-in smart water consumption algorithms compute your body’s hydration needs according to water intake, body composition, daily activity level, and outside temperature. With this information, Seed will custom design a water intake schedule that meets your individual needs. Through small vibrations and the LED display, Seed will remind you when you have forgotten to drink enough water.  Seed’s interactive LED touchscreen lid displays real-time water temperature when touched or opened, and displays daily water consumption when closed. The system will warn you before drinking if the water is dangerously hot or stale.  With your support, they will be able to complete our initial minimum order and bring SEED to the global market.

Geek Alabama Crowdsourcing Mornings

This is Crowdsourcing Mornings! This post takes place every weekday morning and highlights one crowdsourcing project I liked from Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or other crowdsourcing websites.

LIfePrint is an App, a worldwide social printer network, and a portable printer that enables a truly unparalleled photo experience. Create Augmented Reality photos, then instantly print those photos directly from your Apple or Android smartphone. Additionally, you can share these real photos with your family, friends, and followers by simply printing to any LifePrint printer in the world! Every photo can tell a story using our Augmented Reality HyperPhoto technology, truly bringing photographs into the new millennium… it’s about time.

Born out of a passion for photographs and a desire for freeing our special moments from digital screens, their team has been working on this project for over 2 years building the use cases, designing the architecture, building the molds for the prototypes, identifying all components necessary for mass production, and engaging with the supply chain.  They’ve spent countless hours defining the best possible experience for sharing physical photos and then developed a fully working Bluetooth version for iPhone. Though the app is not yet complete, it is currently well under development. They have manufacturing partners eager to begin tooling and building their hardware.  They’ll make this happen on time!

Crowdsourcing Mornings: Bullet LED Flashlight

Geek Alabama Crowdsourcing Mornings

This is Crowdsourcing Mornings! This post takes place every weekday morning and highlights one crowdsourcing project I liked from Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or other crowdsourcing websites.

Light is essential in our everyday lives. We need it to see—when in cars, when finding keyholes, even when we’re outdoors.  They have noticed that many everyday carry, or EDC, essentials are too dull, and current EDC flashlights are too big and bulky, so they set out to create their own.  A sleek, minimal, and beautiful design, they present to you BULLET, providing a strong LED mini flashlight in its most minimal form, while eliminating bulky flashlights from your everyday carry. Minimize your life.  They believe that your everyday carry items are a reflection of you and your lifestyle. BULLET’S functionality, beauty, and minimalism make it the best everyday carry tiny LED flashlight available. The easiest way to carry your flashlight is on your keys! Save the space in your pockets for what truly matters.

A quick quarter rotation on the head of the BULLET to turn it on, and a quick rotation back to turn it off.  They wanted to get rid of unnecessary buttons to keep it slick and precise. A built in key chain allows you to carry BULLET with you everywhere you go.  They took the smallest, sleekest possible design, and combined it with aircraft-grade aluminum and an anodized finish to bring you a powerful tiny LED light, perfect for everyday use. They believe that the shape, and size kept the design minimal, functional and easy to carry, completely hassle-free in any situation.  Measuring in at an incredible 10.5mm x 30mm and weighing only 6 grams, BULLET is the perfect size flashlight for modern day wear. Powered by three LR41 Button Cell batteries to produce 15 lumens of light, keep it with you at all times, anywhere you go.

Crowdsourcing Mornings: Space Princess Maggie

Geek Alabama Crowdsourcing Mornings

This is Crowdsourcing Mornings! This post takes place every weekday morning and highlights one crowdsourcing project I liked from Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or other crowdsourcing websites.

In 2012 they were inspired to write a book for their newborn daughter. He grew up fascinated with science-fiction and loved characters who were tough and smart- ready to pick up a blaster and lead the troops.  He didn’t want to write an educational book, he wanted to write an adventure. His hope is that this book will inspire you to put on a space helmet and explore the universe.

Space Princess Maggie is a collaborative publishing project using a combination of modern and classic printing and design techniques, with three versions of the book released simultaneously. The first edition will be a hand-bound hard back book printed using movable type on a 1914 Chandler & Price letterpress located at at Green Pea Press in Huntsville, Alabama. Other versions released at the same time will be a full-color graphic novel and ebook based off of a hand-colored first edition.

They have been working in print and animation for over twenty years. The majority of their career has been digital, but they wanted to work on a project that combined classic printing techniques with modern digital techniques.  They want to create a fun and whimsical book with the feel of an old classic adventure.  The design, illustration and writing for Space Princess Maggie is complete, so the campaign is to help fund the materials and labor for printing and binding the books. Once funded the hard work begins. It will take a few months to lay out all the type by hand, align the images, run the press, scan and clean the images for the digital book and finally ship everything, but the results will be a new universe in you hands.
