What a sad day for all snack food fans. Hostess Brands, the maker of such iconic baked goods as Twinkies, Ding Dongs, Zingers, Sno Balls, Ho Hos, and Wonder Bread. announced today they would ask a federal bankruptcy court for permission to close its operations. This move would put around 18,500 out of work including around 200 employees across Alabama. Hostess plans to shut down 33 bakeries and 565 distribution centers nationwide, as well as 570 outlet stores. Hostess CEO Gregory Rayburn said “We deeply regret the necessity of today’s decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike.”
A strike involving 5,000 of the employees is what caused the company to go under. And today people from all around the country have gone to stores and hoarded all of their favorite Hostess products. The most popular product was the Twinkies. The golden sponge cake with the creamy middle. I will miss the Twinkie as it was so good! Here is a video of me enjoying my final Twinkies!
Twinkies were the true American classic! It has been said that Twinkies could last forever! I have found a couple of videos to share the memories and maybe learn and even clone a Twinkie!
But that was not my only favorite Hostess product. I also loved the Sno Ball. The cupcake with the marshmallow layer. I am glad Food Network went behind the scenes to see how the Sno Ball is made!
The other popular brand going under is Wonder Bread. I guess Ricky Bobby will be the last endorsement of this popular bread.
The good news is these brands will most likely be bought by another company and you will see Twinkies, Ding Dongs, Zingers, Sno Balls, Ho Hos, and Wonder Bread soon! But until then you will have to live with these copycat recipes of the Twinkie and Sno Balls.
