Welcome to the Science Mondays segment! Each week here on Geek Alabama, Science Mondays will feature stuff from the world of science and science related content. Our goal here at Geek Alabama is to hopefully have you learn something useful and fulfilling. Science is a geek’s best friend, and we love featuring science content here at Geek Alabama.
Emergency sirens can reach 120 decibels, loud enough to potentially cause permanent hearing damage. And in cities like New York, people can hear them hundreds of times a day. But do they really need to be this loud?
We set out to get to the bottom of this by measuring ambulances on the streets of NYC, testing a bunch of different siren sounds on friends who we definitely didn’t kidnap, and comparing sirens from around the world.
Along the way, we investigated why sirens got so loud in the first place, why modern cars have made them harder to hear, and whether we even need sirens at all.
