Sunday Discussion: Anniston Downward Spiral, And Three Crazy Alabama Government Stories

Geek Alabama Discussion

On this Sunday Discussion on an early Wednesday, I am talking about three Alabama issues you need to know about, let’s go!

Anniston Downward Spiral Continues

Forbes released a list of the best small places for businesses and careers.  The list took all 184 small metro areas in America, and ranked them according to the cost of business, job growth, and education.  Some places in Alabama did great on this list!  Auburn/Opelika was in the top ten, and Tuscaloosa was number 49.  But for Anniston/Oxford, it was not good.  The Anniston/Oxford metro was ranked 179, out of 184 small metro areas in America.  Anniston also ranked very poorly in job growth, ranking 182 out of 184.  The two worst areas for job growth are Dalton, Georgia and Carson City, Nevada.

In the Anniston Star article talking about this issue, Anniston mayor Vaughn Stewart said it was an honor for this area to be ranked at all.  And he said “It’s a starting point, a benchmark, It’s not as high as we want it to be … but as we get involved more and more with economic development … we hope to make it further and further up that list.”  Really?  I have been talking about the economic problems in the Anniston/Oxford area for a long time now on Geek Alabama.  And when I talk about the economic problems to leaders in this area, I often get the stink eye.  Yes, Mr. Stewart talked about this story on his Twitter account, and he was proud, he should be ashamed!

I have been out of work for over three years now, and along with many other people who are also unemployed, people are getting tired of the same old story in the Anniston/Oxford area.  Being along a major interstate highway, we should be better than this!  I have put together a presentation about how to fix the Anniston/Oxford area, everyone should read this!

Luther Strange Against Poarch Creek

Attorney General Luther Strange just can not leave people alone, especially when it comes to an Indian tribe making a living without the help of government assistance.  Luther Strange has filed a legal brief to the 11th U.S. Court of Appeals to try to shut down the casinos run by the Poarch Creek Indians who run electronic bingo machines.  In Atmore, where Wind Creek Casino is located, the casino has turned around the economy in the area, and many people have a good job.  If Luther Strange gets his way, the casino and many other businesses will close down, and people will be forced to go back onto government assistance.  Should we be getting more people off of government assistance instead of being on it?

Mr. Strange said in the brief “At three casinos in Alabama, the Poarch Band’s officers operate thousands of slot machines through a commercial entity.  The State seeks to enjoin this activity or, at the very least, test its legality in court.”  Many people in Alabama feels like this is an issue the state should not be trying to shut down.  The Poarch Creek Indians are getting out of poverty, and are helping their fellow members with the casinos.  And if the state shuts them down, the indians will be forced back into poverty.  The state has better things to do, like attracting jobs.  It’s long time Alabama moved into the 21st Century and allowed gambling!  Read the full state’s brief below.

Alabama Trying To Ban Low-Cost Spay And Neuter Clinics

The Alabama State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners is still on a crusade to shut down the few low-cost spay and neuter clinics, and force people to pay a few hundred dollars at a veterinarian clinic, greedy right?  The board has charged Dr. William Weber of the Alabama Spay/Neuter Clinic in Irondale with fraud, lack of supervision, and substandard care.  And Dr. Weber was convicted, he lost his license for a year and was fined $5,000.  But the ruling has been appealed, and it will take years to go through all of the appeals.

The ASBVME has also filed complaints against Dr. Margaret Ferrell who works at the  Alabama Spay/Neuter Clinic as well.  Dr, Ferrell has been appointed to the ASBVME board and will start in October.  She will replace Dr. Robert Pittman, who is against low-cost spay and neuter clinics, and gets taxpayer money from Limestone county to put down animals at the county shelter, now you can see why the board is against these low-cost spay and neuter clinics.  It takes money away from veterinarians who wants to be greedy, and some vets get taxpayer money to put down access animals.  We should be lowering the stray animal population, not increasing the population!  Greed is an evil thing in Alabama!

Pray To God For Burning Coal

And one more thing, PSC President Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh, PSC Commissioner Jeremy Oden, and Commissioner-elect Chip Beeker are fighting against the EPA for  regulations that aim to reduce power plant carbon emissions by 30 percent.  The rules would limit emissions from coal fired power plants.  And Alabama would be required to lower emissions 27% from 2012 levels.  At a press conference, Beeker said coal was created in Alabama by God, and the federal government should not enact policy that runs counter to God’s plan.  And Cavanaugh called on the people of the state to ask for God’s intervention and pray that the right thing will be done.  And you wonder why we elect crazy people like these.

Let’s see, people who are in state politics wants to pollute our great state more and more?  I believe God wants Humans on Earth to protect the environment, and keep our air and water clean, not pollute our air because God gave Alabama coal.  If we continue to burn coal, Alabama will have pollution problems.  Want some people to not access clean water because it was polluted, ask the people of Toledo, Ohio, who just went through a water crisis.  In my belief, God wants us to protect the environment, not pollute it!  Maybe the people of Alabama should wise up and elect people who are better than these weird folks.
