Missouri is in the middle of one of the largest highway reconstruction programs in the country. The Improve I-70 program is investing more than $3.3 billion to rebuild and widen nearly 200 miles of Interstate 70 between the outskirts of St. Louis and Kansas City. In this video, we travel the project from east to west, looking at the engineering behind new concrete pavement, major bridge replacements, redesigned interchanges, railroad crossings, traffic staging, and the new Rocheport Bridge across the Missouri River.

We also look at why Missouri is reconstructing so much of the corridor at once, how crews can rebuild an operating interstate while keeping traffic moving, and why heavy freight traffic has influenced everything from pavement design to additional truck parking. Nearly seventy years after Missouri became home to the first Interstate Highway System project to break ground, I-70 is being prepared for another generation.
