Welcome to the Roadscapes Wednesday segment! Each week here on Geek Alabama, Roadscapes Wednesday will feature roads and infrastructure related topics. Geek Alabama Editor / Publisher Nathan Young is often called the “road geek” for a good reason, Nathan loves roads and loves talking about roads!

Interstate 15 through the Mojave Desert is one of the busiest and most punishing desert corridors in America. Between Southern California and Las Vegas, the Mojave Freeway carries weekend travelers, freight, RVs, desert visitors, and emergency crews across a landscape that can look empty — until something goes wrong.

In this episode of Beyond the Exit, we look at the I-15 corridor through Baker, California, the long desert run toward the Nevada line, and the Baker Grade — a climb out of one of the hottest parts of the country where heat, traffic, isolation, and mechanical stress all come together.

This is not just a story about a highway. It is a story about the people who use it: truckers hauling freight, families headed to and from Las Vegas, off-roaders and vacationers entering the Mojave, and the emergency crews responsible for covering an enormous stretch of desert with limited resources.

Along the way, we’ll pass places like Baker, Zzyzx Road, Shadow Valley, Mountain Pass, and the open Mojave Desert — all tied together by one road that millions of people depend on every year.
