Welcome to the Good News Fridays segment! Each week here on Geek Alabama, Good News Fridays will feature something good, wholesome, positive, and overall something great. After a long and stressful week, we all need something good to read or watch on Fridays! Enjoy a heartwarming post below.
This Memorial Day weekend was our first time ever celebrating in America, and it’s one we won’t forget.
We spent the weekend at Lake Martin with our friends from Birmingham, staying in a quiet lakeside house tucked into the trees with a screened porch overlooking the water. Rain on the roof, a fire going, country music playing in the background and nowhere else to be.
The next morning started with a proper Southern breakfast cooked by Steadman before an unexpected text changed the day completely. Our friend Mark was out on the lake with his boat and invited us along. What followed was one of those perfect Alabama days that feels impossible to plan. Cruising across Lake Martin, hearing stories about the lake’s history, spotting bald eagles overhead, seeing hidden homes along the shoreline and eventually pulling up at Chimney Rock.
What looked easy from the boat felt very different standing at the top. I eventually made the jump, but Steadman took it even further with a leap from the very top that seemed to hang in the air forever.
Later we ended up back on the water, back by the grill, a couple of beers deep, watching the evening settle over the lake. We even somehow reeled in my first fish ever, a catfish.
More than anything, this weekend gave us time to reflect on what Memorial Day means in the United States. The freedoms that allow days like this to exist came at a cost, and we’re incredibly grateful to the servicemen and women who made that possible.
This was our first time at Lake Martin, our first Memorial Day weekend in America, and a side of Alabama we never knew existed.
