Such an amazing rescue day today. I’m already so in love with these dogs and can’t wait to introduce them to the pack.
The majority of dogs we bring in from the South end up being heartworm positive. It’s treatable, but it’s also a long and expensive journey. One that requires patience, consistency, and a lot of care.
I’ve heard there’s some controversy around heartworm prevention, and I don’t fully understand it. When used properly and at the correct dosage, I’ve always had experienced that prevention works well and is safe. And in areas where heartworm is prevalent, not giving dogs that protection just doesn’t feel like doing them justice.
It’s incredibly easy for heartworm to spread… all it takes is a single mosquito bite.
Every heartworm positive dog that comes to the sanctuary is carefully quarantined and supported through treatment until they’re healthy and ready to fully join the pack.
