In 1970s New York, aspiring real estate mogul Donald J. Trump strives to escape his powerful father’s shadow. Early in his career, he meets Roy Cohn, a political fixer who becomes a pivotal mentor. Cohn teaches Trump to gain wealth and power through deception, intimidation, and media manipulation. The rest is more than history. It’s our current reality. The Apprentice is directed by Ali Abbasi, starring Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong, Maria Bakalova and Martin Donovan.
The obstacles we have faced releasing this movie are well documented. Our distribution was blocked. We were hit with a cease and desist from Trump’s lawyers. The Apprentice, a candid portrayal of Donald Trump’s rise to power, received an eight-minute standing ovation at Cannes and had a triumphant North America premiere at the Telluride Film Festival. However, because the film provides an unfiltered look at Trump’s complicated and often unseemly journey, his campaign issued a cease and desist order as they attempted to halt its release in the U.S. and tightly control the narrative throughout the election cycle. These legal threats have caused major media companies to shy away from distributing the film, fearing potential retribution if Trump is re-elected. Despite this, the filmmakers are pursuing a grassroots, independent approach to distribution.
