As a new mom and an educator, I understand wholeheartedly the value that books bring to children’s development. I wanted to find books that my little one, Jojo, could see herself in. I also wanted her to be able to learn Chinese through them as well.

In my search for bilingual Chinese/English books for Jojo, I found some books but most of them were catered to people who could read Chinese characters or are Mandarin speakers. While Asian representation and bilingualism is more prevalent in books today than when I was a child, there can still be more. Then I thought, “Why not write my own series?”

I felt the need to create a series for Cantonese speakers — for parents like me — who want to pass our language on to the next generation through children’s books. At that moment, the idea for Jojo Adventure Books was born.

Jojo Adventure Books is a bilingual children’s board book series for Cantonese and English speaking families and is accessible to all levels of literacy in Chinese. This series features text in English and Traditional Chinese characters accompanied by Jyutping. Jyutping provides phonetic support for Cantonese speakers, whether or not they can read the Chinese characters.

This series is centered around Jojo, an Asian-American toddler, who is learning about the world around her. Each book features a new adventure that Jojo goes on and showcases the different animals, fruits, and other encounters along the way. You can teach your little one words in Cantonese and English through this series of little adventures that are brought to life with playful watercolor-style illustrations.

Each book will be a 6” x 6” board book with rounded corners, 22 full-color interior pages, and printed in soy ink with a matte and spot UV finish. You will also have access to additional resources on the website including activity printouts and audio files.

By backing this project, you are supporting the creation of the first three books of this series:

  • Jojo Goes to the Aquarium
  • Jojo Goes Berry Picking
  • Jojo Goes to the Zoo

As of November 28th, this project has raised $7,500 of their $9,000 goal.  This project has 2 days left to raise the $9,000 or it will not be funded.  For a pledge of $15, you will get three e-Books.  For a pledge of $36, you will get three books.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/jojoadventurebooks/jojo-adventure-books?
