Crowdsourcing Mornings: It Gets Even Better: Stories Of Queer Possibility

This is Crowdsourcing Mornings! This post takes place every weekday morning and highlights one crowdsourcing project I liked from Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or other crowdsourcing websites.

Please read our crowdsourcing guidelines at:

It Gets Even Better: Stories of Queer Possibility is an anthology of speculative short fiction about positive queer possibility. Stories may feature near-future sociopolitical or technological change, far-future imaginings of new societies, alternate universes with completely different systems of gender and relationships, alternate histories proposing better outcomes for true events of the past, creative explorations of queer identity—any kind of speculative fiction that posits queer affirmation and joy.

The table of contents will include some of our favorite stories by:

  • Charlie Jane Anders
  • Zen Cho
  • Amy Griswold
  • Nibedita Sen
  • Merc Fenn Wolfmoor
  • …and maybe you!

General submissions will open soon after we reach our initial funding goal, and will fill the majority of contributor slots. We aim to feature a mix of established and new names, and we are committed to showcasing a broad variety of perspectives and backgrounds. We do not require or expect authors to disclose their personal identities; we will commission paid sensitivity reads before publishing stories that focus on identities we don’t share. There is no fee to submit, and contributions to the Kickstarter will not affect acceptances in any way.

We are both queer creators as well as editors, and we strongly believe in treating creators well, especially as we anticipate that many of our contributors will be from marginalized communities. We have prioritized this principle at all stages of planning—our initial funding goal includes a pro rate of 8 cents per word for all of our authors, as well as fair prices for cover art, layout, and sensitivity reads. We chose an audiobook as our first stretch goal for reasons of accessibility, and the next two stretch goals focus on increasing pay for all of our contributors.

We also believe in treating our supporters well, regardless of how much they are able to contribute. If the audiobook stretch goal is achieved, the audiobook will be included in all pledges at the $10 tier and above. If we reach the bookmark goal, we will include bookmarks with all physical book pledges. If we get to the sticker goal, stickers will go to every backer regardless of pledge amount. If we reach our funding goal before the December holidays, we’ll post an update with a non-holiday-specific IOU card image that backers buying the anthology as a gift can print for their recipients, since the book itself will not be available by then. All backers at every tier will have the (opt-in, for privacy) opportunity to have their names listed in the anthology, and access to a high-resolution desktop background image of the cover art.

As of January 4th, this project has raised $20,000 of their $23,000 goal. This project has 4 days left to raise the $23,000 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $10, you will get one eBook.  For a pledge of $25, you will get one physical book.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to:
