Alabama’s Back To School Tax Free Weekend Is On August 1-3

This weekend, if you don’t have kids, I would avoid major supercenters like Wal-Mart because they are going to be swamped during the Alabama Back To School tax free weekend.  From Friday August 1st to Sunday August 3rd, shoppers will not pay the 4% state tax on items needed to go back to school.  And many cities and counties are also waving their sales tax as well!  To see the list of cities and counties participating in the tax free weekend, go to: https://www.revenue.alabama.gov/salestax/STholiday.cfm

To get back to school items tax free, there are a couple of rules.  First, per article of clothing at or under $100 are tax free.  That means shirts, pants, shoes, uniforms, and most other clothing items are tax free this weekend.  Computers, computer components, and computer software with a sales price of $750 or under are tax free.  For school supplies, all items that cost at or under $50 each item are tax free.  And all books at or under $30 are tax free!  To see the items that are tax free, go to:  https://www.revenue.alabama.gov/salestax/STHolidayQuickRefSheet14.pdf

For the ones going out to take advantage of the tax free weekend, good luck and brave the crowds!
