Randoh Sallihall the spokesperson for Word Unscramble Tool (Unscramblerer.com) commented on the findings: “America’s 2026 most mispronounced word searches are dominated by the top 3 words: Worcestershire sauce, Gyro and Dachshund (accounting for more than a quarter of the top searches). Academic research shows that the main causes for people to mispronounce words are irregular spelling, words borrowed from other languages, regional variation (40 regional accents in America), mishearing and unfamiliarity. Irregular spelling is a common cause for all types of mistakes in English. Word length however seems to have no effect on the difficulty level.

Top U.S. states that search the most for how to pronounce words are 1) Idaho, 2) Colorado,  3) Oregon, 4) Utah and 5) Vermont. Our findings for each state are interesting, because they show that pronunciation curiosity is not limited to one type of word. Top foreign words and names: Gyro, Aoife, Acai, Nguyen, Dachshund. Top place names: Juneau, Saguaro, Louisville, Raleigh, Spokane, Montpelier. Top common English words: Water, Salmon, Schedule, Data. Top cultural figures and media: Hozier, Laufey, FIFA. Top regional vocabulary: Eschatology, Paczki, Sevierville. Mispronouncing words can lead to embarrassing situations. Best avoided in work settings, especially if the work is related to communication. We encourage people to stay curious and improve their verbal skills.”
