Welcome to Disability Awesome. Each week, this post will feature a person or persons with mental and / or physical disabilities who are doing awesome things! As someone with an disability, I love it when others when disabilities do great things!
In this video, I share 10 behaviours as an autistic adult. We explore autism in adults, autistic stimming, repetitive movements, social rehearsal, and routines through examples you might recognise in your own life.
You will hear about changing position when relaxing, making unusual movements while concentrating, and talking to yourself to work through a problem. I also discuss physically acting out imagined scenarios, adding gestures or sound effects to stories, and repeatedly checking things you already know are fine.
Other examples include walking around while thinking, practising facial expressions, and rehearsing how a conversation will sound or feel before speaking. We also look at lying on the floor and completing a particular sequence when nobody is there to interrupt you.
If you search for autism symptoms, signs of autism, or stimming examples, these stories offer a look at autistic daily life. Some viewers may recognise experiences they usually hide around other people, including movements, expressions, or spoken thoughts.
These are personal experiences, rather than a checklist for diagnosing autism. Relating to a behaviour does not establish that you are autistic, and your experiences may differ from mine.
Which of these 10 behaviours do you recognise?
