After the release of our viral documentary Duty Free, my 80-year-old mom moved into the cramped apartment that I shared with my boyfriend in NYC. Suddenly, my life became “2 gay men and a mom, the sitcom.”
As a storyteller, I knew I had to record this experience, but I didn’t know what it would become – until now.
Building on the success of our feature documentary and the tens of thousands of viewers who have been inspired by our story, I’m turning three years of audio recordings from inside our apartment into a new podcast series called Raising Adults. The podcast will chart our trio’s experience of growing up together…again. Through one-on-one interviews and candid recordings from inside our home, the podcast series will transport audiences into our living room for the real-life joys, financial struggles, frustrations, and fights that come with caregiving for an adult while becoming an adult yourself.
Across the United States, there are some 40 million families who are figuring out this new – and surprisingly emotional – parent-child dynamic. Through the dozens of podcast interviews I’ve conducted, I’ve been inspired by how so many of those families are navigating this role reversal moment with grace, some by choice, others by circumstance, and many by culture. It’s an entertaining and revealing deep-dive into homes across the country from families willing to bear it all.
I believe we’re trusted messengers of this story. Since the release of the film, I’ve joined the Board of the National Council on Aging, meeting with older folks and those who support them in community based organizations across the country. Meanwhile, my mom and I have traveled to high-schools and universities, joined national broadcasts, spoke at conferences, and met with politicians to advocate for intergenerational solutions to the lack of care infrastructure in this country.
