The South is full of legendary barbecue joints but some stretches hit harder than others. In this video, I lay out what I believe are the 10 best BBQ areas in the South. These ain’t ranked by Yelp stars or number of locations. This is about flavor density, cultural weight, and smoked meat per square mile.
To help break it down, I’ve mapped out what I call “BBQ pockets”—small but mighty regions (usually under 50 miles wide) that may be low on population but high on pitmaster prestige. Some are household names. Some are tucked between two interstates and a Dollar General. All of them are worth the drive.
Whether you’re a pulled pork purist, a brisket believer, or just someone who enjoys getting a little sauce on your shirt, this ranking was made for you.
