MMANWU is a 2D animated short film set in modern day Nigeria. The film follows Ogechi, a Nigerian-American teenager, as she travels back to Nigeria after the death of her grandfather. Riddled with grief, Ogechi’s mourning is interrupted when she’s confronted with an aspect of her culture she does not understand, forcing her to contend with her identity as both Nigerian and American. Centered around Igbo-Nigerian culture and traditions, Mmanwu mixes magical realism and horror to explore themes of grief, spirituality and cross-cultural understanding.
We see the world through Ogechi’s eyes as she experiences an Igbo burial ceremony for the first time. She’s captivated by the vibrant celebration of her grandfather’s life. Her phone camera darts from masquerade to masquerade, in awe of their distinct rhythm and movement, but when the ceremony concludes she starts to suspect that she’s being followed by one.
Mmanwu is the debut project of ZOMA Studios, a newly founded studio based online. Our team consists of passionate creatives from all over the world. We’ve been working on this project over the past year, and we’re excited to finally bring you on the journey of getting it made.
