Crowdsourcing Mornings: I Couldn’t Read; Now I Have A Dream

Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

Learning to read can be tough for kids who have disabilities.

Why am I so far behind everyone else? Do my friends think I’m stupid? Is it even worth the effort to try?

As a kid with learning disabilities, I did not have anyone I could look up to to show that my future could be bright and full of amazing possibilities. But, even when I felt like giving up, there were people who had faith in me and knew that somehow, I had something great to give to the world. My Grampa Bill especially insisted that there was something very special about me and that I would find the strength to overcome the obstacles in my path. He never gave up on me and that helped me to not give up on myself.

My grandpa was different than a lot of other people’s grandpas. He appreciated a lot of interesting things like exotic food and beautiful gardens; and he even had a shop in his garage where he invented things. I miss him a lot and I am hoping that his legacy will live on through my books, which will be based upon true stories of his unique and wonderful life.

Who Doesn’t Like the Ice Cream Man?: A Grampa Bill Story is loosely based on something that really happened. Imagine the shock of the entire family when we learned that Grampa had chased the ice cream man out of the neighborhood!

Together, Grampa and I experienced the consequences of doing something without thinking it through. We discovered you could become a better person by seeing the world through the eyes of others, and taking responsibility for your own actions.

Millions of kids struggle with learning disabilities. Let’s help!

I want all my books to be fun, and I also want those kids to know that I am one of them. I struggle everyday with aspects of my disabilities, but I’ve learned to succeed anyway and life is good. I have a kids YouTube channel called Time to Tell a Tale where I do all kinds of stuff like arts and crafts, science experiments, and learning activities. But what I mainly do is really fun and engaging read alouds of children’s picture books. Imagine! The kid who couldn’t read, reading to other kids for a living!

My goal is to encourage children who don’t like to read or can’t read by making the experience of reading exciting! I encourage them through fun and silliness, and engage them through personal expression. This not only pertains to reading and learning, but life in general. And now I am on the verge of realizing my dream to become an author.

As an author, I’ll have the opportunity to engage with children in a whole new way. I plan on going to schools as a visiting author and connect with children face to face. I’ll be telling kids what my experience was growing up, how I learned to enjoy and value reading, and how that put me on a path of being an author. If I can be successful and find a path in life, other kids can too, and I’ve got lots of plans on how to inspire them.
