Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

Tales and Oracle of Eleven is a fascinating collection of ancient legends, the sort that has been passed down through generations in South East Asia. These are the stories we grew up hearing from our parents, grandparents, and cultural elders. Oral traditions are an important part of the cultural identity of many South East Asian countries, but their ephemeral state leaves them vulnerable for future generations. By turning them into a book and oracle deck, we hope to ensure that they are not lost or forgotten over time.

So, this isn’t just a collection of old stories with an accompanying Oracle Deck. With the Tales and Oracle of Eleven, it is our hope to preserve and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the region and to provide an opportunity for people from other parts of the world to learn about and appreciate the unique mythology of South East Asia.

By pledging to our campaign, you can help us bring these to life:

  • The Tales of Eleven – An illustrated storybook filled with stories of mythical creatures and heroic adventurers.
  • Oracle of Eleven – An Oracle deck and guidebook filled with lessons learnt from the tales. These cards aim to guide and connect with your intuition.
  • Add-Ons – Postcards, Bookmarks and altar cloth designed by our wonderful guest artist!

The Tales of Eleven is an illustrated book filled with stories of mythical creatures and heroic adventurers. You can immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of fables and folklore as this anthology presents four enchanting tales from each of the eleven unique countries, carefully curated to showcase the diversity and beauty of their traditional storytelling.

This beautifully illustrated book is filled with stories of mythical creatures and heroic adventurers. These were hallmarks of childhood and cultural identity. They teach lessons of self-reliance, perseverance, the importance of remaining calm in difficult situations, as well as what not to do when life puts you through your paces. Didactic, steeped in cultural relevance, and just plain fun, if you’re a fan of mythology or simply love a good story, this book is an opportunity to discover the rich and varied cultures of Southeast Asia via our folklore as told by people who grew up surrounded by it.

Collecting stories from different countries was quite a challenging task, especially since many of these stories were passed down through oral tradition and have been scarred by the painful effects of colonization. In some countries, we see local stories, once woven into the fabric of their communities, systematically erased and slowly forgotten. Despite facing resource limitations, Sha approached the research and writing with great care, making sure to select stories that were not widely known and focused on ones featuring diverse protagonists, intriguing outcomes, and meaningful analogies.

It is important to us that in the retelling process, close attention was paid to accurately representing the creatures mentioned in the stories, ensuring they were native to the respective regions or held cultural significance. You can check out a sample of the stories on our website here.

As of August 4th, this project has raised $23,000 of their $24,968 goal. This project has 7 days left to raise the $24,968 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $29, you will get one storybook.  For a pledge of $43, you will get one oracle deck.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ambisun/oracles-and-tales-of-eleven/
