Crowdsourcing Mornings: Something Else

Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

Judith’s house stands alone. Time has shaped the home, leaving its mark with water rings and dust. Surrounding the house lies acres of sodden abandoned fields – the warm and rainy winter taking its toll on the once hardened soil.

Faced with the sudden disappearance of her beloved Shadow, Judith calls upon her estranged daughter Lily to return home and help her with the search.

But when Judith gets a devastating call from a local farmer, Lily is forced to face up to her mother’s grief and come to terms with her own.

Set over one day and night, Something Else is a glimpse into the intricacies of family bonds, experiences of loss, and (perhaps most significantly) our hopeless inability to express our true feelings to those closest to us.

Loneliness and loss are two things that everyone will experience at some point in their life. I remember my mum once telling me that the death of one’s pet can also be a reminder of all the other grief in a person’s life, and I think this is so true. It’s devastating to lose an animal, a companion, but it can also heighten and emphasize a person’s loneliness, lack of companionship and re-open historical wounds of loss. Something Else is an attempt to capture these experiences, exploring the nuances of mother-daughter relationships after a child grows up and leaves home.

This film feels relevant now as we are living through a time when lots of things feel very disconnected. We communicate with loved ones through screens, buy food from large supermarkets with no idea where it comes from and casually read atrocities in the news before scrolling on Instagram. I’m as big a culprit for this as anyone else. In Something Else Judith and Lily are disconnected in many ways. Lily lives in the city, miles away from the land she grew up in, whilst Judith remains deeply rooted in the countryside. They both are lonely, suffering in different ways, yet fail to vocalize this to each other. Despite this, there are moments of connection between them and this is where the hope lies.

As of January 18th, this project has raised $3,600 of their $12,072 goal.  This project has 13 days left to raise as the $12,072 or it will not be funded.  For a pledge of $13, you will get a mention in the credits.  For a pledge of $19, you will get a digital link to the film.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/something-else/something-else?
