Crowdsourcing Mornings: Opo Coffee: Roastery | Cafe | Training Center

Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

We’re Opo Coffee, a new specialty coffee roastery and cafe in the greater Atlanta area. Construction on our space is in the final stages and now we are looking to secure final funds for the equipment (espresso machine, grinders, etc) for our coffee training center.

I (Jonathan) have endeavored to live my personal life according to these values. And now, I’m excited to join others in building a community of people who bring respect, positivity, and honor front and center in a new coffee company.

The word “opo” means “yes” – with respect – in the Filipino language. Just like when I use this term in respectful response to my parents, we want Opo Coffee to be deferential and positively affirming in its interactions with all customers, employees, the local community, and members of the global coffee value chain.

Opo Coffee will be an Atlanta-based specialty coffee company operating a roastery, coffee shop, and coffee training center. While our coffee products and services may be familiar to all, it’s our “why” and “how” that we hope sets us apart. Opo has an expressed commitment to a “quadruple bottom line” of People, Purpose, Planet, and Profit.

From its inception, Opo Coffee has been a team effort. Each one of us brings to the table different strengths, weaknesses, and life experiences. For the past year, we’ve laid a foundation for Opo to launch, and we’ll soon invite others to work alongside us.

The three of us have already been working full-time for Opo for the last 12 months. We obtained most of our funding through equity investment from family and friends, and we’re looking to the Kickstarter community to get us the rest of the way to the launch of our location.

Our location under construction is in the Old Depot District of the city of Decatur (on the East side of Atlanta), and was formerly a pizzeria. For our renovations, we’re converting the oven room into our roastery, the dough-proofing room into our packing and shipping center, and the walk-in cooler into our coffee training lab. The new space will be bright and comfortable, with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, including an oasis of a courtyard patio.

Construction is currently slated to wrap up in November this year, which makes it likely for a full grand opening in December!

This Kickstarter campaign will help us purchase our final pieces of equipment for our coffee training center. Achieving our goal of $40,000 will allow us to purchase an espresso machine, an espresso grinder, a bulk coffee grinder, a batch brewer, a hot water tower, and cupping and brewing supplies that we will use for our coffee education classes.

As of November 9th, this project has raised $41,000 of their $40,000 goal. This project has 2 days left to raise as much as it can.  For a pledge of $20, you will get one bag of coffee.  For a pledge of $30, you will get two bags of coffee.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/taproomcoffee/opo-coffee-roastery-cafe-training-center?
