We have been documenting 5 young Syrian girls living in a refugee camp over the last 5 years. Our partially animated series captures what it’s like growing up in a refugee camp at the border of Syria and Lebanon.

SafeZone will open your heart and take you on an emotional journey of healing and inspiration in the face of a very harsh reality. Each young girls story is truly inspiring, and we’re so excited to share their stories with you!

The Syrian civil war began 10 years ago, on March 15th, 2011. After a decade of conflict, 3.5M refugee children have now lived all, or most of their lives in a camp. According to the UN, the global average stay in a refugee camp is now 17 years: 17 years!

Many of these displaced children have had little or no access to school. They are often forced to work in hard and unsafe conditions from the age of 7, in order to help support their families. And for the young girls, the situation is compounded by the threat of early marriage or worse: Rape.

The world needs to meet these girls to understand what’s at stake, to feel their courage and hear what they have to say. This series will take the audience deep into life in a refugee camp. We’ll take you into their tent homes, to experience first-hand their challenges and their dreams. You’ll fall in love with these brave young women. They are the next generation of Syrian women, and what happens to them will define generations to come.

The film series is called SafeZone because the stories take place around an informal education centre that provides a ‘safe space’ for these kids to heal. It is here where they can for a brief moment, forget about the tragedy that surrounds them and be kids; Play, learn, make friends and find support in dealing with the complicated reality of becoming a woman in a refugee camp. Through the harrowing stories of Fatima, Rahaf, Rana, Khadeeja, and Nada, the SafeZone documentary series will raise awareness about the need for better educational solutions, and safe spaces for displaced children.

As of December 15th, this project has raised $21,000 of their $70,000 goal. This project has 7 days left to raise the $70,000 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $25, you will get access to two films online.  For a pledge of $50, you will get a poster and film access.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/safezoneseries/safezone-a-documentary-series?
