Welcome to the Science Mondays segment! Each week here on Geek Alabama, Science Mondays will feature stuff from the world of science and science related content. Our goal here at Geek Alabama is to hopefully have you learn something useful and fulfilling. Science is a geek’s best friend, and we love featuring science content here at Geek Alabama.

No one is talking about the real reason our weather forecasts are getting worse when we need them most. For nearly a century, the entire forecasting system has depended on twice-daily weather balloon launches. But that backbone is breaking. Stations are skipping launches, equipment is failing, budgets are thinning, and the upper-air data that global models rely on is disappearing.

In this video, I break down the hidden crisis behind modern forecasting failures—from Alaska’s devastating storm that struck hundreds of miles from where models predicted, to Hurricane Melissa’s chaotic GFS tracks that showed everything from Florida impacts to a clean miss.

This isn’t a model problem.
It’s a data problem.
And it’s starting to show up everywhere.
