«Love Hotel» is a collection of photographs of the facades of Japanese Love Hotels, taken in 2023 during a road trip between Tokyo and Shikoku Island. Photographer François Prost paints a vernacular portrait of Japan, made by ordinary roadsides, faded signs and colorful facades, far from the usual clichés. From the outrageous urbanisation of the big megalopolises to the orderly agricultural countryside, the landscapes pass through the prism of the facades of these establishments, emblematic of Japanese popular culture, originally intended to offer a space for Japanese couples to conduct their amorous activities given the lack of privacy within the small family home.
The Loves Hotels offers a room extension dedicated to the act of love, far removed from family considerations. The project involved several hundred images, and was a continuation of projects previously carried out on the shop fronts of festive venues: After Party (2011/23 France), Gentlemen’s Club (2019, USA), Discoteca (2020, Spain) Club Ivoire (2023, Ivory Coast).
The book will feature 230 pages of photographs. It will have the same format and finishing as the Gentlemen’s Club, Club Ivoire and After Party (edition 2) books, i.e. a 15×24 cm hard cover, padded in leatherette with letterpress and photo printing glued in a “bowl”. A print run of 1000 copies is planned.
As of November 12th, this project has raised $1,900 of their $5,892 goal. This project has 59 days left to raise the $5,892 or it will not be funded.
