Over the last weekend I went to go see Twisters at the McWane Science Center on their IMAX screen. This post will talk about what I thought about the movie with a lot of spoilers. As always, the spoilers will not start until after the movie poster below.

For starters, the tornado action was spectacular. The filmmakers did a really good job with the CGI special effects to make the tornadoes look like they were real. And I also enjoyed the damage the tornadoes were causing during the movie.
The filmmakers did a really good job studying tornado YouTube videos to give the audience a good feel of what tornadoes do. And just like in the movie, tornadoes are very destructive and deadly.
The main character in the movie is named Kate, and we saw her in the movie multiple times accurately determine where tornadoes would go by looking at wind patterns in the grass among other things. It seemed like she has a hidden sense in her to determine the weather.
In the first 10 minutes, we saw three of her fellow storm chasers get killed in an EF5 tornado. And I loved how those three people were sucked away in that tornado never to be seen alive again.
Is it wrong to root for the tornadoes to kill people? Because throughout the entire movie, I was smiling and cheering in my seat seeing the tornado kill lots of people! Good job filmmakers!
I thought the science throughout the movie was mostly accurate. It’s a Hollywood movie, so there was going to be some inaccurate science sprinkled in. Like the ending El Reno tornado scenes, where Kate drove into a EF5 tornado to launch a solution into a tornado to weaken it.
Another thing I questioned in the movie was the rodeo scenes. I mean come on, there would be way more warning that a huge tornado was coming towards that Rodeo. Same for the El Reno tornado scenes, if there was a huge EF5 tornado heading into the city, there would not be a softball game or a farmers market happening that day.
You could tell the movie wanted to have a villain aspect to it. And the villain was Storm Par. These folks wanted the big tornadoes to happen so they could buy up the destroyed land. Way to go company, ruining people’s lives everywhere across the Midwest!
And the movie did a very good job depicting our society today when it comes to tornado coverage. During every tornado outbreak, you will find people who chase tornadoes for social media clicks. The Tornado Wrangler was a pretty good thought-out name, and the entire crew was thought out very well. I also loved how they had a journalist from the United Kingdom following them for a story.
I wish the technology we saw Storm Par using was actually a real thing. You know, setting up three mobile Radars around a tornado. We will probably see that one day. And of course, the movie had to set up a love scene between Kate and Tyler, the Tornado Wrangler!
The scenes at Kate’s mother’s house were a good calming effect between the tornado action, and I did like seeing that science fair model Kate built for middle school.
Another thing about the movie was how to survive a major tornado. Drilling screws down into the ground from a pickup truck without armor will pretty much mean certain death if you do it yourself. And the empty swimming pool scene does show that without protection things can fall on top of you. And of course, an overpass is one of the worst places you can be during a tornado.
Overall, I loved twisters! Being the weather geek that I am, I pretty much geeked out for the entire movie. I loved all the action and tornado effects in the movie. And the movie was an overall wonderful experience. This movie is a good way to escape all the current gloom and doom news we are seeing right now.
Definitely go see Twisters in your nearest theater. And if you have an IMAX theater nearby, go see Twisters there. Seeing twisters in IMAX was a glorious experience!
