Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

“Christmas Of The Dead” is a modern take on a classic Nordic tale. As if “Kill Bill” had a child with “Shaun Of The Dead”. “Christmas Of The Dead” is a shameless, bloody Grindhouse-scented B-movie that always winks at the viewer and that, once it starts, never lets its foot off the accelerator.

Sägen means a short story told to be true, yet often with supernatural bits in the mix. That’s us. We’re a Swedish west coast film company that focuses on folklore, mythologies, and all the beings that inhabit them. We’re film lovers and nerds first and foremost, who just happen to also know how to make a movie and want to show you something really, really awesome! During our first year, we’ve made three award-winning short films and we’ve got two in the editing room! “Christmas Of The Dead” aims to be our next step into a bigger, bolder short film.

When a reluctant confirmand is surprised by an undead horde of malevolent ghouls on a Christmas Day sermon she is reunited with her absent mother who shows her how to believe in herself and kick ass for the Lord.

“Christmas Of The Dead” is based on a Nordic classic tale known as “De Dödas Julotta”, where a young girl arrives way too early for the Christmas Day sermon which happens at dawn. There, she is met by the undead who are having a sermon of their own. This was believed to be true in Sweden and the other northern countries which was meant to make people aware of the dangers of traveling alone to the church too early as it was actually deadly back then, with death by frost or delirium. These days, not many die from this in Sweden and arguably the “julotta” has also loosened up a bit on the early clock, making it somewhat easier for folks to go there. We still have the polar bears to fight, of course.

This is a true classic, short and to the point with great motifs such as the little girl meeting a presumed dead relative at the church (in the tale the relative actually IS dead, but in our film, the relative is in fact ALIVE) or how the ghouls grab her scarf, turning it into dust. Here at Sägen Film, we take great care and pleasure in reinvigorating these old tales into something new – fleshing them out and either trying to really capture the horrors of the stories, or making them fun and entertaining. “Christmas…” is absolutely envisioned to be more of the latter. A fun ride, filled with martial arts action, heart-warming comedy, and over-the-top bloodshed to the point of it being silly. We love horror, but here our goal is to make you laugh and just enjoy yourselves. A mix-pitch would be “Kill Bill”, “Shaun Of The Dead”, “Braindead”, “From Dusk Till Dawn” and maybe also a bit of “Resident Evil 4” (the video game) in there. That’s what we’re trying to achieve in this 10-15 minute short film.

With your help and support, we can make it a reality, this Christmas.

As of August 17th, this project has raised $8,600 of their $9,137 goal. This project has 2 days left to raise the $9,137 or it will not be funded.  For a pledge of $19, you will get a thank your credit in the film.  For a pledge of $28, you will get a digital soundtrack.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/christmasofthedead/christmas-of-the-dead-a-nordic-folklore-zombie-film?
