Being a mother of two incredible kids, one 7 and one 3 years old, I’ve read countless of children’s books to them over the past years. My 7 year old son has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair as well as other mobility aids. One thing I’ve noticed while reading them these stories is that there is not enough representation for children with disabilities in these books. I want to change that. I want a more inclusive world where children with all sorts of disabilities are not given the feeling of being left out when reading storybooks, while providing an enjoyable reading experience for all.
And by writing this book, I want to show him and the world how a disabled child can live a normal life and take part in every day tasks and activities, because that’s exactly what we do as a family…living life to the fullest and experiencing everything the world has to offer.
“An Adventure A Day” is a children’s book that follows the incredible journey of two young children, loosely resembling my kids, who embark on a series of exciting and fun-filled activities during the start of their summer holidays. It is a fun, light hearted, easy to read story that will showcase with beautiful illustrations how families with disabled children live their “normal” everyday lives.
I made it a point to not use words to point out that one child is disabled and uses various mobility aids. I wanted the illustrations to do so. I wanted kids to read, look at the images and if they wanted to ask about the boy using all the equipment, they could. I didn’t necessarily want to point it out in words and give it all so much importance as all the equipment is just part of the person.
Through their adventures, readers will learn about the power of friendship, determination and the importance of embracing life’s challenges. Join us in bringing this inspiring and uplifting story to life by supporting our Kickstarter campaign today!
