Crowdsourcing Mornings: Launching Our Artist Leadership Training Program

Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

The School of Making Thinking is fundraising to launch our Artist Leadership Training Program!

Since 2011, The School of Making Thinking (SMT) has been offering transformative artist residencies, classes, festivals and conferences that enhance artists’ practices and shift cultural conversations about the power of art and community. Last year, we began an exciting process of growing our organization to better support artists as cultural leaders. This September, we are reaching out to our community to help us launch our Artist Leadership Training Program (ALTP) to promote ethical leadership and co-mentorship in the arts world at large.

What is ALTP?

The Artist Leadership Training Program (ALTP) is conceived out of a vision that artists are leaders already – project leaders, cultural leaders and thought leaders – and that leadership needs to be tooled and skilled. So often group dynamics deteriorate in collaboration, or under the stress of production, an artist will lash out at people with less power. This program will empower artists to:

  • Investigate their leadership style,
  • Examine inherent power dynamics as related to race, gender, class, age and other social/economic paradigms,
  • Gather tools for ethical leadership,
  • Connect to resources for developing the social strategy of their artist practice,
  • And enter a community of artists workshopping the kind of leadership our future needs.

The Artist Leadership Training Program will also allow us to source residency ideas from our community. We want to ask YOU – what kind of programming do you want to lead? What social and political context does your vision emerge from and what impact do you hope to have? How do you want to influence artists towards a vision for a better a world? We can then support you to lead your vision for a program with competitive pay rates and the leadership training to inhabit this opportunity well.

The set goal of this Kickstarter is the minimum of what we need to prototype and launch ALTP in 2023. Additional funds will go towards increasing residency leadership pay, growing our scholarship fund, building new strategic partnerships, spreading the word about the ALTP and other programming opportunities, and covering the costs associated with running the beast of SMT, so that WE can keep showing up for YOU.

As of September 22nd, this project has raised $15,000 of their $26,500 goal. This project has 8 days left to raise the $26,500 or it will not be funded.  For a pledge of $25, you will get one original poem.  For a pledge of $50, you will get to attend one SMT class.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/makingthinking/launching-our-artist-leadership-training-program?
