Airlines run a very big business, and to stay profitable, they must decide where to fly or what routes to cut on a constant basis.  If a route is not used by many flyers, it’s often cut out.  But if enough people demand a new route, an airline might create it.  Also, airlines must contend with other airlines who can offer the same route for less.  Wendover Productions talks about how airlines decide on where to fly.
