Imagine spending years in prison just because you stopped clapping!

CLAPTOCRACY is a short film which is based on true events that have happened many times during the reign of tyrannical governments, including and especially the former Soviet Union. The film is presented both – as a literal depiction of a real event, and as a metaphor for physical and psychological distress callously inflicted on a citizenry by a dictatorial state.

The film shows one single scene. It occurs in one location. There is no dialogue. Through expert sound design, evocative cinematography, and powerful performances, audiences will witness and experience oppression, urgency, suspense, torment, and finally – terror.

In the Soviet Union (as an example), when government officials hosted gatherings and senior officials spoke, citizens were required to attend. At the conclusion of the speech, they were required to applaud. Any cessation of applause by any individual was seen as a lack of loyalty and an affront to the State. In extreme cases, the applause – the clapping – continued unabated for extended periods while government police patrolled the audience, looking to see who would be the first to stop clapping. That person would be arrested and harshly treated, even if older, feebler, or not well.

Sometimes, the clapping continued for so long, it seemed like it would just never end. This film depicts one such occurrence.

As of March 26th, this project has raised $2,500 of their $50,000 goal. This project has 38 days left to raise the $50,000 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $15, you will get a one-time streaming link.  For a pledge of $25, you will get a digital download of the film.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/957536661/claptocracy?
