Camping Supplies and Lane Cake, Two Things Alabama Is Known For

So, Alabama has become known for so wacky things, and in two latest stories found on the internet.  You will learn why people in Alabama love their camping supplies and their Lane Cake.  First off, let’s learn about why Alabama is in love with camping supplies.

eBay Study

eBay, the site where people go to try to make money by selling everyday things, analyzed which items each state purchases the most, finding the top 500 brands for each state and then boiling them down to general categories.  And according to eBay, Alabama purchases camping goods the most.  I guess since Alabama has plenty of outdoor areas, that makes since.  But the funny thing is what the neighboring states purchases the most on eBay.  In Georgia, people purchase office supplies the most.  In Mississippi, it’s mattresses.  In Florida, it’s smartphones and tablets.  And in Tennessee, people purchase dental supplies the most, yes dental stuff.

So, here is a infographic from eBay showing the most purchased items in each state.

Alabama’s Top Dessert

According to Slate, Alabama’s most popular dessert is from the classic book “To Kill A Mockingbird.”  Lane Cake is made from four layers of white sponge cake that are slathered in between with a mix of egg yolks, butter, sugar, raisins, and bourbon. The frosting is made with boiled whipped egg whites.  Lane Cake was created by Emma Rylander Lane in the 1898 cookbook, “A Few Good Things to Eat.”  Most people in Alabama, and in the south, have not heard or tasted Lane Cake, so I find this story from Slate as very interesting.

Slate called this story the United Sweets of America.  And the neighboring states from Alabama have some more common choices for their top dessert.  In Georgia, it’s peach cobbler.  In Florida, it’s key lime pie.  In Mississippi, it’s Mississippi mud pie.  And in Tennessee, it’s banana pudding.  At least in those states, those desserts are recognizable, and made all the time.  And in most other states, their top dessert is something most people have had.

Taking a look at the list, I think Alabama got shafted with the hardest dessert to make.  And a dessert most people have never tasted or heard about.  Seriously, Lane Cake, I think Slate could choose something more recognizable, like the Moon Pie!  See the story and map from Slate by clicking the picture or link below!

Food Review: Sonic Drive-In Master Blasts

Geek Alabama Food Reviews

Today, Sonic Drive-In offered a great deal as a one day special.  Sonic allowed anyone to buy one Master Blast, and get one free.  So I went down to the Sonic Drive-In next to my apartment and yes, I got two Master Blasts for the price of one.  A great deal!  I am glad the carhops put these in a cup holder because I walked there and back.

Master Blasts are upgrades to their regular Sonic Blasts and feature special ingredients with their real ice cream.  Sonic offers six different flavor combinations you can choose from, and I got the Cookie Dough Master Blast and the Banana Split Master Blast.  You can also choose from Triple Chocolate, Turtle Pecan, Caramel Brownie, and Pineapple Upside Down.  And yes, these were good!

The banana split one features Sonic’s real, vanilla ice cream perfectly mixed with decadent chocolate chips, banana and strawberries.  I did taste real strawberries and chunks of real banana in the ice cream!  Yes, Sonic uses real strawberries and bananas in their products, it’s better than the artificial stuff you get at other places.  Often, I like getting a real fruit slush at Sonic.  This was a very good dessert!

The cookie dough version features Sonic’s real, vanilla ice cream perfectly mixed with soft, chocolate chip cookie dough pieces.  There was plenty of cookie dough pieces in the ice cream and it did taste like real cookie dough ice cream.  I don’t know if this was better than the banana split Blast, but it was very good as well!

Yes, I did enjoy the Sonic Master Blasts, and I might go back there again to try another flavor.  At my local location, one medium Master Blast with tax is $5.05.  Not a bad price to eat/drink something good!  Sonic Drive-In has a great new product here, and you should try it, you won’t regret it!  Learn more about Sonic Drive-In at:

Food Review: Papa John’s Mega Chocolate Chip Cookie

Geek Alabama Food Reviews

Papa John’s is known for their pizza, which I like.  For a while, Papa John’s here in Anniston / Oxford was the only pizza joint that delivered to your house.  Pizza Hut does not deliver and Domino’s was not even in town until about a year ago.  Papa John’s does have some great dessert products like the Sweet Sticks, Applepie and the Cinnapie, they are good!  Now Papa John’s has come out with the Mega Chocolate Chip Cookie!

stuff 005

The mega cookie comes in a small Papa John’s box.  When I had my pizza and cookie delivered, I could smell the cookie over the pizza.  The cookie only cost $5 because I ordered a pizza.  I used a Black Friday special one day code that gave my entire order at 50% off.  The cookie comes in a tin bowl and is sliced into 8 pizza shaped pieces.  The cookie is almost like a cookie pizza.

stuff 002

The cookie was thick, and it was soft and crunchy as well.  The cookie had plenty of chocolate chips and was still very warm, even after I finished eating my pizza.  The cookie is baked in the same pizza oven used to bake the pizzas.  And I assume the cookie comes already rolled out in the cookie tin pan and the employee only has to place this into the oven.  I wonder if a cookie company like Nestle Toll House or Pillsbury got an exclusive deal to make these cookies for Papa John’s?

stuff 007

The cookie was moist on the inside and crunchy on the outside.  I would eat this thing by itself with a tall glass of milk.  I would only get this when you order pizza at Papa John’s.  I know kids will love eating this!  Kudos to Papa John’s for doing something creative like this.  I wonder how long it will be before Domino’s or Pizza Hut starts doing something like this as well.  I would like to see Papa John’s come out with other cookie varieties like sugar, peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, and others.  Now that would be good!

If you are going out to get pizza from Papa John’s, get this cookie, it was good!
