Welcome to the Roadscapes Wednesday segment! Each week here on Geek Alabama, Roadscapes Wednesday will feature roads and infrastructure related topics. Geek Alabama Editor / Publisher Nathan Young is often called the “road geek” for a good reason, Nathan loves roads and loves talking about roads!
On Interstate 70, a freeway becomes a street. In Breezewood, Pennsylvania, drivers pass traffic lights, gas stations, truck stops and restaurants before reaching the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The missing direct connection began with a federal funding rule, then became part of the local economy.
This is the story of how the gap formed, why it survived, and how reconstruction and open road tolling are changing the choices ahead. It also connects to the abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike and the Old PA Pike Trail.
