Welcome to the Trainscapes segment! Each week here on Geek Alabama, Trainscapes will feature train content including videos of trains and behind the scenes action of trains and locomotives. Some people have an interest in seeing trains, and we here at Geek Alabama aim to please the train lovers!
By the 1860s America’s railroads ran on several widths, among them six feet on the Erie, five feet across most of the South and four feet ten in Ohio. Lincoln ordered five feet for the Pacific Railroad, and Congress then set four feet eight and a half by law. This is how the country came down to one width, from the fight at Erie in 1853 to the South’s two-day change in 1886 and the last half inch after it, told from the laws, the census, the railroad press and the historians who studied it.
