Florida went the entire season without a hurricane…until now.
Hurricane Isaias is forcing people across the Florida Panhandle and the Northern Gulf Coast to prepare after months of unusually quiet conditions. In this video, I travel through the Panhandle and to Flora-Bama, to document evacuations, how people are getting ready, and how past storms still shape the way this region responds.
From Hurricane Ivan and Sally to Hurricane Michael, the most recent Category 5 hurricane to make landfall in the United States, this part of Florida has a long memory when it comes to hurricanes.
I also look back at Hurricane Isaias in 2020, a storm I covered personally, and explain why more Atlantic hurricane names beginning with the letter “I” have been retired than any other letter.
One storm can change the way an entire hurricane season is remembered.
