On December 10, 2021, a monster tornado touched down in Arkansas and didn’t stop for over four hours, carving a 165-mile path across four states at nearly 50 mph.
At 9:27 PM, it slammed into Mayfield, Kentucky with 190 mph winds, flattening the historic downtown and collapsing the candle factory with around 110 workers trapped inside.
Homes were swept off their foundations, the ground itself was scoured away, and 57 people lost their lives just two weeks before Christmas.
Yet despite damage that pushed right up against EF5 thresholds, this tornado was officially rated EF4, a decision experts still debate today.
This is the story of the Quad-State Tornado, the longest-tracked December tornado ever recorded, and why it may have been too fast to rate.
