The Story Paramount & CBS tried to kill!
This Kickstarter is to fund the feature length documentary The Battle for Axanar, a complete history of the Axanar film project from its origins at Star Trek: New Voyages in 2010, through the release of Crucible, the final part of the Axanar trilogy, which will release later this year/early 2027.
The epic true story behind the world’s most famous Star Trek fan film…told by Hollywood professionals!
Veteran television producer Seth Sherman, the Executive Producer of Shark Week, Little People, Big World, and the current A& E hit Squatters!) has spent years watching one of the most extraordinary fan-film stories ever unfold. A lifelong Star Trek fan himself, he has teamed with acclaimed documentary director Josh Bishop to tell the complete behind-the-scenes story of Axanar for the very first time.
How it All Began:
Axanar started as a story in Alec Peters’ imagination and came to life when fellow fan filmmaker James Cawley cast him as Captain Garth in the Star Trek: New Voyages series. That experience inspired Peters to write a feature-length Axanar screenplay and create an entire Starfleet era set 20 years before Kirk took command of the Enterprise.
Alec’s long time friend Richard Hatch soon signed on to play Kharn, with J.G. Hertzler (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) joining days later. After months of pre-production, Prelude to Axanar raised more than $100,000 on Kickstarter in March 2014.
The release of Prelude to Axanar at SDCC that July led to a crowdfunding campaign that raised over $600,000, followed the next year by the release of The Vulcan Scene—the first completed scene from the planned feature film.
The production values rivaled those of professional Star Trek productions. Shortly afterward, CBS and Paramount filed a copyright lawsuit, setting off a 13-month legal battle during Star Trek’s 50th anniversary celebration.
The case ultimately settled, allowing Axanar to produce two additional short films, instead of the feature film.
The lawsuit left Axanar financially devastated, and delayed the completion of the story by nearly a decade. Many believed the project would never return.
Axanar Finally Returns!
Nine years after the lawsuit was settled—and after years of setbacks, delays, and relentless determination—the next chapter in the Axanar saga is finally here. The Gathering Storm is the spectacular sequel to Prelude to Axanar and in its first two days got 125,000 views before CBS filed an illegal DMCA take-down notice to have it removed from YouTube.

That episode will be available on September 1st on the new Axanar website as the team just launched Axanar on Demand, which allows streaming of all 5 Axanar short films as well as free downloads of every film.
And later this year, the Axanar Trilogy concludes with Crucible, the final chapter in the epic tale of The Four Years War.
This makes right now the perfect time to tell the story of the Axanar team’s journey.

The Battle for Axanar is being made by Warp 9 Productions, LLC and all the money raised in this campaign will go towards the production of the documentary and, if it hits its stretch goals, the Warp 9 team will make a new Axanar short film First Blood which will use the Axanar cast and crew.
Axanar Productions, the production company that makes the Axanar films, fully supports the Warp 9 team and will be providing all the support they can to Seth, Josh and their team. But no money from this campaign will be used to finish the Axanar trilogy, which has been paid for by Axanar executive producers Dave Lanyon and Gudni Gudnason.
Funds from this campaign will go towards Warp 9 LLC and pay for the production of The Battle for Axanar and any other films, like First Blood, Warp 9 produces, as well as fulfillment of all perks.
