With eleven commuter rail lines, nearly 500 route miles, and 243 stations, METRA is one of the largest commuter rail systems in the United States. Yet behind its daily operations lies a much longer story, stretching back to the earliest days of American railroading. Much of the infrastructure still in use today originated in the nineteenth century, creating both opportunities and significant engineering and operational challenges.
So how did Chicago develop such an extensive commuter railway network, and how has Metra managed to keep it operating while adapting to the changing demands of the twenty-first century, you will find out in this video.
