Children of Tax and Tea is for fans of all things viking-related, and especially for those who enjoy a humorous twist on Norse subject matter. It is a 300+ page, full-color throughout, heavily illustrated, hardback book that covers the history of the Viking Age from the charmingly profane perspective of a foul-mouthed Bostonian.

Imagine an inebriated Mark Wahlberg movie character unloading all sorts of knowledge about the accomplishments and eccentricities of the vikings on a captive audience. The book stems from McSweeney’s longest-running column, “Norse History for Bostonians,” that humor writer Rowdy Geirsson created in 2010 and that comic artist Matt Smith has illustrated since 2017.

We’ve compiled, revised, and expanded the extensive repository of “Norse History for Bostonians” for Children of Tax and Tea. Whereas the original online column was specifically targeted towards proper Massholes familiar with the regional Boston dialect, Children of Tax and Tea is for everyone.* The text of Children of Tax and Tea thus presents a smooth-flowing, easy-to-read narrative while maintaining the tone of the original online column. So that means if you’ve ever wanted to learn more about Harald Fairhair’s egregious taxation without representation policies or the intense Norse-Irish rivalry with old York, you will finally be able to do so without needing to decipher the incomprehensible accent of a drunken Bostonian.

Children of Tax and Tea consists of approximately 50 chapters with deeply honest and insightful titles about Norse history such as “False Advertising in the Era of Viking Age Exploration,” “Sh*t Talk at the Law Rock,” and “How to Get Paid to Stop Attacking Paris.”

In addition to truthfully covering special topics in Viking Age history from the insightful and inebriated perspective of a Masshole, each chapter is also accompanied by a full color illustration that hits the spot like an ice-cold pint of Sam Adams. The book is organized according to the following thematic categories:

-Keeping It Real with Mead, Poetry, and Extreme Violence
-Have Longship, Will Travel
-Warmongering
-How to Democratically Select a State Mandated Religion
-Big Wigs and Sh*t Pricks
-The Everlasting Obsession with Ireland
-Vikings Never Say Die (Unless It’s to Go to Valhalla)

Children of Tax and Tea features previously unpublished chapters and illustrations, as well as original introductory commentary by John Sexton and Andy Pfrenger, the knowledgeable law-speakers of the Saga Thing podcast.
