I can only imagine the fear and panic parents feel when they’re told their child has cancer. Their world is instantly shaken, and time suddenly stops—so many emotions, followed by so many questions.

When I was 10 years old, my cousin Brent lost his courageous battle with childhood leukemia. As a child, I was confused and scared. I didn’t understand why he was sick or the seriousness of what was happening to him – I just knew that I was sad and wanted him to get better.

If I felt such a wide range of emotions, I cannot begin to fathom the depth of how he and his family felt.

Brent’s long and challenging journey introduced me to these raw, real, and deeply human feelings that inevitably shaped the rest of my life. I knew I wanted to help others.

I grew up to be an oncology nurse.

I wanted to provide compassionate and empathetic care during challenging times and create a comfortable environment for patients and their families. I wanted to advocate for patients’ needs and ensure they receive the best and safest care possible.

He is why I became an oncology nurse.

He is why I have been awarded the incredibly humbling and privileged opportunity to be a part of someone’s cancer journey, witnessing their struggles and celebrating their triumphs. He is why unforgettable memories of my patients are forever etched in my heart, and he is why I value the beauty and fragility of life every day. It’s the little things that truly make me smile – like when I see the boldness of orange and purple, his favorite colors

This book is a heartfelt tribute to Brent’s incredible journey with cancer and the inspiration behind the lovable character, Stanley the Sloth. Brent faced life with fearless humor and unwavering positivity—qualities that shine through every illustration and echo in every word of this story.

His vibrant spirit lives on in each colorful page, touching hearts in subtle and powerful ways. Brent’s courage and contagious zest for life gave me the strength to embark on this transformative journey.

In a way, we created this book together—as a gift to children and families navigating leukemia. I hope that it not only helps them understand the illness, but also reminds them, deeply and truly, that they are never alone.

Slow Is the Way to Go is a lighthearted, informative story about Stanley, a baseball-loving sloth who slowly moves (and sleeps a lot) through diagnosis, chemotherapy, and a stem cell transplant.

With the help of his friendly healthcare team, and his lucky shoes, too, Stanley learns how leukemia affects his body, and what he can do to fight it slowly.

This book is designed to educate, uplift, and support children newly diagnosed with cancer and their families through honest, fact-based information, gentle humor, and a spark of light on every page.

It’s also a gentle reminder to take things one step at a time. Breathe. Stay calm. And if you need to rest? That’s more than okay. You’re on sloth time now—slow, steady, and full of heart.

This book is an educational tool that “hugs” children with an everlasting strength that never let’s go. Its upbeat tone grasps a child’s attention to not only learn about their cancer diagnosis, but also provides the key to unlock the heavy door to their feelings as they cope with the difficult stages of childhood leukemia.

As of August 29th, this project has raised $7,800 of their $10,000 goal. This project has 6 days left to raise the $10,000 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $25, you will get one signed book.  For a pledge of $75, you will get one book and one donated to a hospital.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/slowisthewaytogo/slow-is-the-way-to-go?
