The first time I smelled the acrid fumes of a Harley-Davidson roaring to life, I was hooked. The noise, the vibrations, the iconography embedded itself into my DNA. I became obsessed with understanding this subculture, no matter the cost, thus turning my lens, body and mind into vessels of storytelling for the chopper community.
In 2015 I purchased my first chopper, a 1972 Harley Ironhead, from Rick Swaidner, which prior to this, I had never owned nor used tools and had always been told I wasn’t mechanically inclined however, thanks to good friends, Harbor Freight, a man by the name of Tatro yelling at me every weekend as well as generous mentors, I was guided down a path of learning; one I’m still walking a decade later.
I began photographing this book that same summer. Since then, I’ve traveled to more than 40 states and logged over 60,000 miles on a chopper I built with a group of friends from all over the country. These motorcycles are not comfortable by any stretch of the imagination as many lack rear suspension and rely on outdated technology. They will challenge you physically and mentally, teaching patience, persistence, and grit. Those same traits helped bring this project to life, with the support of some incredibly talented individuals I’m lucky to have collaborated with.
The images in this book are more than just portraits of motorcycle enthusiasts. They’re about discovering community within yourself, with others, or out on the road. I created this book in the hope that those flipping through its pages will feel inspired to chase their own long white line. The miles, friendships, and breakdowns documented here have helped me grow in ways I never imagined. This world built on two wheels has carried me through my time in the Navy and helped guide me into civilian life and I hope it will guide readers to their own adventure wherever it may be out there in the world that gives them what choppers have given me.
