Welcome to the Roadscapes Wednesday segment! Each week here on Geek Alabama, Roadscapes Wednesday will feature roads and infrastructure related topics. Geek Alabama Editor / Publisher Nathan Young is often called the “road geek” for a good reason, Nathan loves roads and loves talking about roads!

When Hurricane Helene caused mass flooding in eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina, many roads and highways were severely damaged.

In Tennessee, between Erwin and Jonesborough, highway 81/107/River Road was totally washed out. All traffic now had to go on a 45-minute detour to get to their homes and places of work.

Baker’s Construction Services was contracted by TDOT (Tennessee Department of Transportation) to come repair this major washout.

From November of 2024 until March of 2025, BCS worked tirelessly to restore this road to the public once more.

The deadline for the work was May 31, 2025 and BCS opened the road to the public March 14th, 2025 a whole 2 months early.

This is very important road for all the local residents and represents months of driving 45 minutes out of the way, for a route that normally took minutes.

We are very proud of our crew, led by Roger Carmelo, the onsite Superintendent.

All our operators, truck drivers, survey crew, concrete crew and subs were critical in this effort.
