Radiant Frost is a story about loneliness, survival, and the warm bond between strangers lost in a rapidly changing world. Set in the backdrop of the rugged landscapes of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, the film explores the dark and intimate struggles of a woman who aims to break free from a survivalist cult that has reduced her identity and personhood into nothing. The film delves into the themes of liberation, environmental collapse, and the cosmic feeling of being lost in this modern world.

The main heart of the film is Ruth, a young woman chained to her mundane life of serving her survivalist community: building and sustaining a cycle of life that constantly prepares for an unseen and enigmatic, environmental collapse. As her anxieties for an impending risk worsens, she chooses to risk it all and live a new life – outside of the bubble that her cult has created for her. Tom, a drifter who sells oddities from his van, visits this community, and is confronted by its leader who shines a light on Tom’s own loneliness, abandonment issues, and his need to be a part of a community. Disturbed by all of this, he leaves its premises, only to stop at a gas station where he discovers that Ruth has snuck in his van.

In Radiant Frost, we get a glimpse of a niche community through the eyes of our protagonist, one that is led by ideas of survivalism and a territorial instinct that pushes some of our characters to rebellion and escapism. There is a clash that we will witness between our characters who are rooted in a more rugged and contained way of life and a longing for something beyond, that manifests physically in the natural world and pulls our characters to it. The backdrop of the Upper Peninsula will heighten a feeling of isolation while also serving as a place where our characters can reclaim something in themselves through the landscape. The UP feels like a place to disappear into, and I’m interested in exploring the freedom of that.

This film will take on a cultish and science fiction tone from the beginning, placing the audience in a slightly oppressive but curious world that plays into the thriller genre. I want to humanize the environment in a way that calls for empathy, exploring a near distant future where certain effects of climate change are felt through an obsession with ancient permafrost disease: drinking it to induce immunity and strength, as a means to survive in today’s world. I want to find a balance of style in the film between a meditative, character-driven plot with moments of experimentalism, drawing inspiration from land art, metal and rock music, and my own dreams. The atmosphere of the film will feel haunting and brooding, and at times ephemeral, while remaining grounded in the rugged American landscape that our characters traverse.
