Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment! Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others. The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal. Please enjoy today’s featured project!

Hi, I’m Sarah Smout. I’m a singer-songwriter, cellist, poet and environmental artist and I have been selected for an expeditionary residency to sail around Svalbard in April 2025. The Arctic Circle Residency brings together artists, scientists, film-makers and writers on board a traditional barquentine boat for 16 days. We will carry out research and learn what this place has to say.
The purpose of my residency is to bring back ideas and sounds for my debut album, which will be a mixture of underwater recordings, music and poetry. As my wooden cello can’t withstand the freezing temperatures, I’m taking a new carbon fibre cello to play to the Arctic. Being on board with people working in various disciplines gives me a rare opportunity to collaborate and explore the issues of climate change through different perspectives.
I need your help to cover the cost of the expedition and to record the material inspired by it. If you choose to make a pledge you will be among the first to receive my album, exclusive material from my time in Svalbard, and a host of other creations. I want to share this voyage with you so that we can bring the stories and sounds of the Arctic to a wider audience at a time when it needs our help, and understanding, more than ever.
We are witness to the climate changing all around us, but none so dramatic and fast as in the Arctic. It might be far away but what happens there affects all of us.
This is a huge adventure for me to embark upon. I am so excited and nervous at the same time. I’m trying to make my way there as far as I can by train and boat, and your support can help me do this more easily. Travelling this way means the places I go through can become part of my artistic response, as well as drastically reducing the environmental impact of my journey.

As of December 16th, this project has raised $16,000 of their $18,935 goal. This project has 3 days left to raise the $18,935 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $13, you will get a thank you letter and updates. For a pledge of $26, you will get one digital album.
