Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

Please read our crowdsourcing guidelines at:  https://geekalabama.com/media-kit-pr/geek-alabama-crowdsourcing-guidelines

Thank you for checking out our project! It’s a ground-level look at the peaceful 2021 Kenmure Street protest that prevented two men from being deported, told by the people who were directly involved.

The arrival of an Immigration Enforcement van – sent to detain two residents in the southside of Glasgow, Scotland’s most culturally diverse community – triggers a chain reaction that will make headline news across the world by the end of the day.

In 2021, the UK Home Office discreetly restarted its practice of ‘dawn raids’ in Scotland: people whose immigration status is still pending are taken from their homes to detention centers. If the detainees are ‘unrepresented’ within 48 hours, they could be deported to the country designated as their home by the Home Office.

Within moments of the van stopping into Kenmure Street, residents and activists gather to surround it, spurred by WhatsApp group and social media callouts. Someone slides underneath the van, wedged tight, hoping to buy time – for more people to join, for plans to be drawn, for better solutions to emerge. As the protest fills up the street, too large to be arrested, too local to be kettled, a stalemate ensues. The following eight-hour stand-off with the police forces everyone to consider what brought them to the street and how far they’re willing to go.

This film has been a labor of love since the day of the protest and the result of extensive research and interviews with everyone significantly involved. Our footage covers the whole day, capturing the big newsworthy moments and the more intimate, personal epiphanies within the crowd. This is where our film lives, in the motivations that brought everyone to the street and the sacrifices people were ready to make for two strangers in a windowless van. This allows us to tell a much bigger story of the protests that have shaped the lives and fates of those involved, and of History repeating itself over centuries in a small geographical space.

“WHO HERE IS READY TO GET ARRESTED?”

This story and the many more that inspired our contributors to turn up to Kenmure Street only got a brief moment in the spotlight, left to be remembered through word-of-mouth. This is our opportunity to set the record straight and most importantly create an authentic document of protest history. It ends with a rare and spectacular moment of joy, one of the best happy endings you’ll get to see in a documentary.

As of July 1st, this project has raised $15,600 of their $50,591 goal. This project has 17 days left to raise the $50,591 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $26, you will get one digital poster.  For a pledge of $38, you will get your name in the credits.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/debasers/everybody-to-kenmure-street?
