Crowdsourcing Mornings: Artists For Democracy 2024

Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

In the 2024 election, America’s democracy is at stake. Despite facing 91 felony counts, Donald Trump is all but guaranteed to become the Republican nominee for President. And when this happens, he himself has already promised that if elected as President again, he will rule as a dictator on “day one.”

In 2020, People For the American Way launched Enough of Trump, working with world-renowned artists like Shepard Fairey, Carrie Mae Weems, Ed Ruscha, and more to create and install artist-designed billboards to get-out-the-vote in the battleground states.

Four years later, we’re taking our work to new heights with Artists For Democracy 2024. Several of the same beloved artists joined by new artists and organizers will work to create art across four (and possibly more!) swing states: Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. They’ll convey the stakes we’re up against in this election on billboards, in radio announcements, and at public gatherings.

Art has the power to change perceptions and inspire action, cutting through the noise and speaking to our hopes, fears, and dreams. With your help, we can come together one more time to avoid dictatorship and save democracy.

Why is this important?

MAGA extremists have taken the reins of the Republican Party. Any of the guardrails that existed during Trump’s first term are long gone, with moderate, establishment, and independent-thinking members of the Republican party continuing to be systematically removed or voted out.

Whether we’re facing attacks on reproductive freedom, runaway climate change, or the end of our democracy itself, we’re reminded that America has been here before in elections past, including in 2020. We know what to do: strengthen civic participation, launch get-out-the-vote initiatives, and place ad campaigns across key battleground states. And that’s why we’re asking for your help, once again, because collectively, we can keep democracy alive and defeat Donald Trump.

We’re taking what we learned from Enough of Trump and extending the lens for 2024 with Artists for Democracy. Not only are we producing billboards to encourage civic engagement and save democracy in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Arizona, we’re planning to engage in an organization-wide campaign of peer-to-peer texting, radio PSAs, on the ground organizers, targeted digital ads, and art activations. And if we reach our initial goal, we’ll look to expand these interventions and activities in more key battleground states, like North Carolina and Georgia.

As of April 19th, this project has raised $94,000 of their $60,000 goal. This project has 8 days left to raise as much as it can. For a pledge of $10, you will get your name on their website.  For a pledge of $25, you will get one t-shirt.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pfaw/artists-for-democracy-2024?r
