No Place for Plants

This story, No Place For Plants will be a beautifully illustrated high-quality 40-page hardcover children’s picture book that tells the story of a modern day 8-year-old Native American girl from Los Angeles, California named Pukuu’ (poo-koo) who is on a mission to save her community garden from being turned into a parking garage.

Every Sunday, Pukuu’, her grandmother Ashuuk, and their desert tortoise pet Pa’ar walk to their neighborhood community garden to spend the afternoon with their friends, including the plants and insects. On this particular day, you see them walking to the garden, smelling and connecting with plants along the way, only to find that some terrible news awaits them when they arrive.

Pukuu’ is determined to save their beloved community garden, which means so much to so many, and, with the guidance of her wise grandmother and pet desert tortoise, begins a journey to rally the community and advocate for the plants.

The Children’s Book That Meets The Moment

There is no more urgent time than now. Biodiversity is in crisis, there’s a lack of green space from urbanization, Nature-deficit disorder is rising, cultural sustainability is highly threatened, and our sense of smell continues to be ignored from an early age.

The good news?

Children intuitively understand we are part of the natural world. And they instinctively use their senses to explore. They’re naturally curious and are filled with wonder. This story we’ve written connects both the adult reader and the young child with those emotions.

Ultimately, our goal with this book is:

To engage the child, and adult alike, to be stewards of the plants, passionate ambassadors for the natural world, and active smellers, while acknowledging that Native Americans have been this all along.

A Book With A Timeless Message

As Rachel Carson said “Conservation is a cause that has no end. There is no point at which we will say our work is finished.”

No Place For Plants takes young readers on a heartfelt journey of resilience, community, and the profound connection between humans and Nature. This captivating story, accompanied by vibrant illustrations, is worth reading again and again, as it encapsulates the importance of preserving cherished spaces and the power of collective action.

Through vivid descriptions and enchanting imagery, the book transports readers into Pukuu’s world, where they can feel the warmth of the sun, smell the fragrant herbs, and witness the wonders of the natural world. The colorful illustrations bring the characters and the community garden to life, captivating young imaginations and fostering a deeper engagement with the story.

The story addresses important themes such as the significance of community spaces and the impacts of urban development on the environment. As Pukuu and her neighbors face the impending loss of their beloved community garden, young readers are introduced to the emotions and concerns that arise when cherished spaces are threatened. The book sparks empathy and encourages children to appreciate the beauty and value of green spaces in their own lives.

At its core, No Place For Plants emphasizes the power of unity and determination. When faced with the challenge of saving their garden, Pukuu and her community come together to collect signatures for a petition. This narrative highlights the importance of working together, standing up for what you believe in, and making a difference through collective effort. It instills in young readers the belief that their voices matter and that they too can contribute to positive change in their communities.

Ultimately, the book delivers a poignant message about the enduring power of memories and the irreplaceable role that Nature plays in our lives. It showcases the profound impact of a garden on individuals and communities, reminding readers of the importance of preserving and honoring the natural world.

No Place For Plants is a beautifully illustrated children’s book that blends enchanting storytelling with valuable life lessons. It inspires young readers to cherish Nature, embrace community, and take action to protect the places they hold dear. With its evocative illustrations and resonant themes, this manuscript promises to captivate children’s hearts and minds, leaving a lasting impression and nurturing a love for the environment and the power of collective action.

This is a book for every child, everywhere, at any time.
