Crowdsourcing Mornings: Voices Of The Trees

Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

As the human element of this adventure I have been charged, as part of my job, with raising the funds to birth the voices of these 47 trees, the portraits I have painted of them and the words of wisdom they have shared, into book form.

My Voices of the Trees video tells the story.

Zephyr, my constant lurcher companion, and I are both fell wanderers and river bank bimblers. Whilst she is an expert sniffer out of ill-considered trifles, I have crafted and arted my way, in one guise or another, through seven decades.

We live at the point where Co. Durham and North Yorkshire segue in and out of one another along the journey of the River Tees from fell to sea. I’ve seen faces in nature for most of my life. I knew some of the trees alongside the river had wise words to share but details of quite how, or what, were still hidden in the mists of the future.

I photographed the trees that shouted out to me and amassed an album of tree faces. One night, on a whim, I decided to paint one of them – although I had no idea of it then, Voices of the Trees had been conceived.

As I painted the trees I started to hear the words they wished me to share.

I painted and painted until 47 faces filled my journal.

As the pile of portraits steadily grew I became aware that this had stirred not only a deep passion in me but also a resolute determination that these trees, and their words, would one day be birthed into the world, and not remain forever languishing on a dusty shelf.

This body of work might have evolved into a deck of cards but it hasn’t! Primarily because each painting, photograph and their accompanying words felt like an indivisible whole, each an integral part of the bigger story of the trees of the dale. The dream became that of a hardback A5 book – in full colour on 135gm paper – consisting of 47 double page spreads, to be opened at random to reveal the answer to any query.

As of April 7th, this project has raised $2,350 of their $2,942 goal. This project has 7 days left to raise the $2,942 or it will not be funded.  For a pledge of $27, you will get one signed book.  For a pledge of $29, you will get one book and bookmark.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/robynfell/voices-of-the-trees?
