Crowdsourcing Mornings: The Cure For Depression

Welcome to the Crowdsourcing Mornings segment!  Every weekday morning, Geek Alabama talks about and features one crowdsourcing project from crowdsourcing sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and others.  The hope with Crowdsourcing Mornings is to feature and help a project be successful and reach its fundraising goal.  Please enjoy today’s featured project!

We are Elijah Crawford and Zach Miscavage, Co-Owners of Ugly Art Films, a production company based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We are an arthouse film company dedicated to creating innovative contemplations with music videos, advertisements, and now, short films.

Our first official short film, The Cure for Depression, is a commentary on how people are forced to navigate through social situations with mental illness in today’s society. Our goal with this project is to create a film that fosters empathy within our viewers, and for them to remain thoughtful towards those who they might have neglected or distanced themselves from. Our time together is limited, and our new film hopes to encourage an appreciation of the people who give us joy, while they’re still here.

We need your help to make this film a reality.

Throughout most of the media that we consume, from television to scrolling on Instagram, portrayals of mental health are so often saturated with surface-level platitudes. The experience of mental illness is weaponized in our consumerist culture – in effect, perpetuating harmful narratives that influence misunderstandings that lead families, friends, and communities to ostracize these individuals.

When writing The Cure for Depression, Elijah examined his own experiences with mental illness and the spectrum of experiences from those that surround him to elevate Edie, a character often unseen and unheard, with individuality and authenticity. Edie spirals into a self-help voyage, confronting the nuances and complications that are rooted from her depression, an all-consuming isolation and loneliness that many face day to day.

As of March 21st, this project has raised $12,600 of their $20,000 goal. This project has 22 days left to raise the $20,000 or it will not be funded. For a pledge of $15, you will get one music playlist.  For a pledge of $25, you will get one digital postcard.  To learn more and to pledge money, go to: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thecurefordepression/the-cure-for-depression?
