3 Reasons Why The World Belongs To Geeks In 2020

Okay, 2020 sucks for pretty much everyone. But for a chosen few, things are looking up, and have been for quite some time. No, we’re not talking about the super rich who always seem to be insulated from the effects of global recession and deadly pandemic alike. We’re talking about a group that has been downtrodden and marginalized for generations. We’re talking, of course, about geeks. And if you’re reading this blog, there’s a good chance that this means you!

Of course, you may not be feeling on top of the world right now. You may be reeling from the economic effects of the pandemic. You might have lost income, or even lost your job. You might have been affected by the virus itself or seen someone close to you go through it. However, while the world may seem like an unfortunate and unfriendly place you, dear geek, can hold your head up high. Because this year belongs to you, and we have a good feeling about 2021, too…

We dominate in the arena of pop culture

Take a look in any multiplex (if you’re in a territory where you can), and you’ll see that geeks dominate the cultural milieu. DC comics, Marvel, Star Wars. They’re among the most profitable franchises in the world. People all over the planet who’ve never picked up a comic book can tell you exactly who the Guardians of The Galaxy are. And that’s pretty awesome! Heck, geeks aren’t just represented in the world of pop culture, we’re actively shaping it. You need look no further at everything the Release The Snyder Cut of Justice League movement have accomplished to see how the voice of fandom can make the seemingly impossible happen in Hollywood.

When the global pandemic hit, where were people looking to find relief and escape from a world that suddenly hostile and alien? Why, to the world of video games, of course! There are many who insist to this day that Animal Crossing got them through the pandemic.

There are more ways than ever for us to get paid to do what we love

There was a time when geeks had to suppress their geekery in the world of work. But in the past 20 years, digital technology has transformed the way we work as well as our perception of the workplace. As such, there are more ways than ever in which geeks can get paid to do what they love, either as a side hustle or a lucrative freelance career.

Heck, you can get good money and incentives for something as pleasurable as playing mobile games thanks to services like Playphone. The more you play, the more they pay. What’s not to love about that?

Our skills are helping to change the world

There was a time when those of us who loved tech, software and all things digital were marginalized. Now, however, it’s cool to be a tech geek. Just look at the way people line up outside of Apple stores. Best of all, the skills that most associate with geekery like coding, scripting and other aspects of software and hardware development will likely further change the face of how we work and how we educate our kids within the next couple of decades.

So give yourselves a pat on the back, geeks. Because the world belongs to us now!
